What is a Sanctuary?

A Sanctuary helps bring together devotees, enabling them to work and perform ritual together and is facilitated by a Torchbearer from the Covenant of Hekate.

Torchbearers are devotees who have taken an additional commitment to the service of the Goddess within the CoH. The title Torchbearer is not a rank but more of a description of what each individual commits to.

As part of this role each Torchbearer has the option of creating a space to celebrate Hekate.  This can be a permanent ritual area where ritual can be held or a temporary space in a home or private location.

The CoH does not manage these spaces. Each Sanctuary is directly cared for by the Torchbearer and one may or may not be required to be a CoH member in order to attend.

the Sanctuary Icon

Our Blessed Icon was hand-carved in linden wood and was ritually ensouled during the founding Ritual of the Sanctuary, in March 2020. Fashioned after the style of Alkamenes which is often thought of as the first statue to show Hekate as triple-formed.

“It was Alkamenes, in my opinion, who first made three images of Hecate attached to one another, a figure called by the Athenians Epipurgidia (on the Tower); it stands beside the temple of the Wingless Victory…”

~Description of Greece, Pausanias, 2nd century CE, trans. Jones, 1918

Wooden statues in antiquity were common. The statuette pictured is of Hekate from Ptolemaic Egypt and was found dating back to early 300BCE. It is carved out of juniper wood and would have originally been painted.

Our Icon remains veiled in raw saffron silk and is only revealed to attendees and members at Sanctuary events. It has been made to represent differing faces, aspects and names of Hekate as we view Her as Polymorphos, the “Many Formed”.

Membership and Meetings

The Sanctuary of Hekate Polymorphos is open to all Covenant of Hekate members as well as non-members at the discretion of the Torchbearer.

Interactions between individuals both online and in person should be carried out with fairness and openness, mindful of the Sanctuary’s aims, the 5 Virtues and the nature of Hekate’s divergent and diverse nature.

In addition to the online presence and community via Facebook, there will be a regular monthly group held to explore Hekate that is open to anyone in the local area who is interested in attending.

Other public and occasionally members/invite only gatherings will take place throughout the year, marking various holy days and celebrations such as the annual Rite of Her Sacred Fires.
